Rowhani criticizes IAEA for its stance toward Iran
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, March 13, IRNA -- Secretary-General of Iran`s Supreme National Security Council Hassan Rowhani here on Saturday criticized the UN nuclear watchdog for its stance on Iran. Speaking in a gathering of Iranian and foreign reporters, Rowhani said the resolution adopted by the UN nuclear watchdog on Iran`s nuclear activities was unfair, adding it falls short of recognizing Iran`s extensive cooperation with the IAEA over the past months and what it reflects are beyond realities. Rowhani further noted that the IAEA resolution fails to consider the views of important veto-wielding countries such as China and Russian federation as well as those of the Non-Aligned Movement(NAM) NAM state have 13 out of 35 seats on the IAEA Governing Board and proposed a series of amendments to tone down the draft resolution adopted on Iran. For example, NAM wanted the word "deplores" in the resolution to be changed to "strongly regrets". Rowhani further noted that though the resolution creates no commitment for Iran but "the tone of the resolution was not suitable." He said Iran was dissatisfied with some clauses of the resolution adding that what is important is that the representatives of all countries, except the representative of Canada, spoke in favor of the Islamic Republic. He said this shows that the United States failed to lead the IAEA session as it wanted to and that the stance adopted by Iran was right. All the states participating in the session declined to support a proposal set forth by the United States to refer Iran`s case to the Security Council and called for the issue to be settled through dialogue and peacefully. Rowhani said this was a great success for the Islamic Republic while terming some clause of the resolution as a "deceiving trick". He said the comparison between Iran and Libya was absolutely irrelevant and meant just to deceive the public opinion of the world nations. Rowhani said the Americans were after sparking a tension targeting the Islamic Republic of Iran but it seems that the United States has received a setback rather than anything else. Rowhani praised the NAM states, China and Russia for their realistic and rational attitudes vis-a-vis the Iranian nuclear activities. He said however Iran was not satisfied with the stances taken by three European states France, Britain and Germany with which Iran had talked on its nuclear programs and sought to find out solutions to the dilemma. He termed the IAEA resolution draft as the one presenting image of an `ugly devil with dangerous horns and sharp teeth`, whose horns are now removed, and its teeth are broken but its ugly image still remains. Rowhani went on to say that certain sections of the resolution have exaggerated realities, for instance the P-2 part, which is far from realities. HB/214 End
