ElBaradei pleased with Iran`s growing cooperation with IAEA
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Vienna, March 8, IRNA -- The Head of the UN nuclear supervisory body Mohamed ElBaradei here on Monday voiced pleasure over considerable progress in Iran`s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Addressing the inaugural session of the IAEA Board of Governors meeting, ElBaradei voiced serious concern over omissions in Iran`s declarations about advanced P2 centrifuge designs. "I am seriously concerned that Iran`s October declaration did not include any reference to its possession of P2 centrifuges designs and related R&D, which in my view was a setback to Iran`s stated policy of transparency," said ElBaradei. He said the issue is of high importance given Tehran`s October statement for presenting an all-out and complete report on its nuclear activities. ElBaradei asked Iran to ensure full transparency and help restore international confidence by taking the initiative to provide all relevant information in full detail and in a prompt manner. He said one highly important point concerning Iran is that the country reveals all related information in full detail and in a short span of time, thus ensuring full transparency of its all nuclear activities. He added that Iran`s full cooperation with the IAEA is also of high importance for all the countries that have provided the country with nuclear technology and equipment. The UN official said cooperation has started for a while and will continue. ElBaradei said that the issue of special importance regarding Iran`s case is the suspended and unsolved problem of pollution caused by the low or high purity uranium discovered in Kala Electric Company and in Natanz. He expressed hope that global confidence in Iran will be restored in future without discovery of new issues and in light of the satisfactory settlement of both the issue and the remaining issues. The IAEA chief said all the signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty should sign up to the additional protocol as well. The US accuses Iran of attempting to develop nuclear weapons -- a charge Iran has strongly denied. In pursuit of the US allegations, the UN watchdog sent teams of inspectors on several occasions, including between the October and March meetings of its board of governors, to examine Iran`s nuclear facilities. Iran has been fully cooperative with the IAEA and come clean with all its nuclear activities. Recently Iran`s Supreme National Security Council Chief Hassan Rowhani called on the IAEA to discard Iran`s case from its agenda due to Tehran`s full transparency and cooperation. The IAEA however refused to accept the demand with its chief saying, "That depends very much ... on the kind of cooperation we hopefully will continue to receive from Iran." The US has launched hues and cries, alleging Iran of mass violations in its nuclear activities in a bid to raise the country`s dossier at the UN Security Council. Iranian political analysts believe the US -- as it failed in the IAEA`s November Board meeting -- to push the case to the UNSC through the board. The European Union trio, which are signatories to the October 21 Tehran Declaration, as well as the group of the board members representing the Non-Aligned Movement had backed Iran`s cooperation and transparency at earlier IAEA meeting. 216/AH/210 End
