EU warmly welcomes Iran`s signature to Additional Protocol
IRNA
Brussels, Dec 19, IRNA -- Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), welcomed the signature today by Iran of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Additional Protocol. "I welcome the signature today by Iran of the IAEA Additional Protocol as an important step in building international confidence about the peaceful nature of Iran`s nuclear program. Full continuous implementation of this protocol as well as compliance with IAEA Board of Governors Resolution are crucial in this respect." "I also call on all countries who have not yet signed the Additional Protocol to do so as soon as possible,`` said Solana in a statement issued in Brussels this afternoon. Solana said he is looking forward to discussing the nuclear and other important issues with Iranian authorities during his planned trip to Teheran in January. The European Commission said it "warmly welcomes today`s " signature by Iran. "The signature of the Additional Protocol (AP) constitutes an important step towards Iran`s full and prompt compliance with its international obligations under the non-proliferation regime,`` said a Commission statement. On his part, Commissioner for external relations Chris Patten said "the signature of the Additional Protocol (AP) today is good news as it will help in establishing the international community`s confidence in Iran`s assurance about the peaceful nature of its nuclear programme and its commitment to non-proliferation. "Rapid ratification and implementation pending the entry into force of the AP is now essential to provide full transparency on the Iranian nuclear programme," he added. NK/211 End
