MP: Iran to sign NPT additional protocol in Vienna
IRNA
Tehran, Dec 17, IRNA -- An Iranian lawmaker on Wednesday reaffirmed Iran`s will to sign the additional protocol of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in Vienna on Thursday. Member of the Energy Commission at Majlis Hossein Afarideh, whose statement followed that of the head of Iran`s Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) Gholam-Reza Aqazadeh regarding Iran`s conclusion of the NPT additional protocol on Thursday, highlighted international significance of the move for the Islamic state and said the `important and positive` event would favor national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Speaking to IRNA, Afarideh said Ali-Akbar Salehi, Iran`s permanent envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will most likely sign the additional protocol of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in Vienna on Thursday. Salehi is believed to be replaced -- a claim he himself confirmed, saying his tenure`s expiration was the main reason. Afarideh added that conclusion of the agreement by Iran would testify that the country is sincere and faithful to its promises. Asked whether Iran would have to abide by the protocol immediately after its conclusion, Afarideh said it should follow its due legal course, that is compilation of a related bill by government, and its endorsement and approval by the Parliament. He said that most probably Majlis will agree to the government bill and approve it. He added that conclusion of the protocol would provide Europe with the chance to expand cooperation with Iran. Referring to Iran`s natural and geographical conditions as well as its huge oil and gas resources, Afarideh said it would be good chance both for Iran and Europe to promote their commercial and economic relations. 216/AH/210 End
