Russian FM expresses satisfaction over IAEA resolution on Iran
IRNA
Moscow, 26 nov, IRNA - Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov in Warsaw on Wednesday expressed satisfaction with a resolution on Iran adopted today at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. He said, "We are not satisfied with all the parts of the resolution, but the main thing is that we were able to keep this issue under examination at the IAEA without it being sent to the UN Security Council as some countries wanted." The IAEA resolution adopted Wednesday on Iran`s nuclear program was the result of a "complex compromise", said Ivanov in Warsaw where he arrived Wednesday on an one-day visit to discuss bilateral cooperation after Poland joins the European Union in May. Ivanov said the issue of Iran nuclear program would have gotten compounded if it had been sent to the UN Security Council. He said the IAEA resolution would provide favorable ground for the IAEA-Tehran cooperation. He expressed hope that Iran-IAEA would continue cooperation. The IAEA wrapped up its Wednesday session by adopting a resolution on Iran`s nuclear activities. The board convened both on Thursday and Friday to study Iran`s nuclear case, succeeding to reach a consensus on a resolution on Iran on Wednesday after lengthy debate and investigation of different drafts. The resolution, drafted by three European Union states, does not refer to Iran`s non-compliance with safeguards agreement or reference of the case to the UN Security Council. HB/214 End
