Correspondents say Iran`s dossier will not be raised at UNSC

IRNA

Vienna, Nov 21, IRNA -- Foreign correspondents, covering the meeting
of the International Atomic Energy Agency`s (IAEA) Board of Governors,
believe that Iran`s nuclear dossier will not find its way to the UN
Security Council.
The reporters told IRNA that based on an opinion poll, conducted
on diplomats who are members of the IAEA Board of Governors, only
three countries, namely Canada, Australia and Japan, support
Washington`s tough stances against Iran.
An Austrian TV`s political reporter and Middle East expert told
IRNA that Iran`s case will not at all be brought up at the UNSC and
Tehran is hoped to continue cooperation with the IAEA.
He said that Iran has had very good cooperation with the Agency
and the tough or soft decisions by the Agency should not affect the
cooperation.
A BBC correspondent commented on the reason Iran`s case would not
be raised at the UNSC, saying IAEA chief Mohammad ElBaradei has been
convinced that Iran will continue cooperation with the Agency in
future, intending to abide by its commitments.
He said the European Union had made its stances fully clear and
is not by no means for referring of Iran`s case to the UNSC.
He added that the IAEA Board of Governors too is willing the issue
is settled by the board itself.
The reporter said the IAEA does not favor escalation of the
standoff and is seeking a way for its settlement.
The reporter predicted that the final resolution on Iran would
call for suspension of uranium enrichment and speedy conclusion of the
additional protocol of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
A Japanese TV correspondent too said it is not yet clear what
would be the IAEA`s decision on Iran but what`s of importance and
should be paid attention to is that most probably Iran`s case would
not be raised at the UNSC.
He said ElBaradei`s report features a balance between positive and
negative points on Iran`s nuclear activities.
Many IAEA members are concerned that Iran will cut cooperation
with the Agency if a strong-worded resolution is issued.
The reporter said Iran`s recent cooperation with the Agency and
its readiness to sign the additional protocol of the NPT have been
highly positive steps.
He said it will not be fair if the IAEA Board refers the issue to
the UNSC.
