Most IAEA board members favor EU trio-backed resolution
IRNA
Vienna, Nov. 20, IRNA -- Majority of the members of the International Atomic Energy Agency`s (IAEA) board of governors have reportedly been favoring a resolution authored by France, Germany and Britain. Even the IAEA Chief Mohammad ElBaradei has voiced readiness to support the resolution, which can be a stinging setback for the US. NAM group of states represented at the IAEA board of governors too have reportedly been closing stances on Iran. The European trio`s draft is said to have been focusing on positive steps taken by Iran over the past few weeks to deflect international suspicions, including suspending uranium enrichment and agreeing to inspections on demand by the IAEA inspectors. The three West European sponsors of the draft "want to see continued cooperation and transparency from Iran," said a senior western diplomat familiar with the resolution. It would also ask Iran to maintain its commitment to suspending uranium enrichment. The United States had hoped that the board of governors of the IAEA would find Iran in violation of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) at today meeting. But diplomats across the spectrum of the 35-nation board agree that no more than three nations -- Canada, Australia and Japan -- support Washington`s stance. The line supported by majority of the 35-nation IAEA board members is praiseworthy. It shows the world appreciates Iran`s transparency and peaceful nuclear activities. The approach is hoped to remain unchanged until conclusion of the IAEA board meeting. 216/215 End
