Iran: Tehran Refuses To Suspend Uranium-Enrichment Work
Tehran, 19 November 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Iran's top national security official says Tehran will refuse any further demands from the UN nuclear watchdog to halt its uranium-enrichment activities.
Hassan Rowhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, today was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying that any resolution imposing "legal obligation" to suspend uranium enrichment was "unacceptable."
Rowhani's statement came the day before the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency is to meet to discuss Iran's nuclear program.
Iran says its nuclear program is to generate energy for peaceful purposes.
Some Western countries, particularly the United States, suspect that the program leads to production and development of nuclear weapons.
