IRNA

Moscow, Nov 10, IRNA -- Secretary of Iran`s Supreme National Security
Council (SNSC) Hassan Rowhani on Monday met with President Vladimir
Putin at Kremlin Palace in Moscow on Monday.
In the meeting, also attended by Russian Foreign Minister Igor
Ivanov and Secretary of the Russian Security Council Vladimir
Rushaylov, Putin referred to Iran as a good and significant neighbor
and voiced Russia`s determination for expansion of mutual relations.
Turning to Iran-Russia relations as decisive, he lauded Iran`s
prominent role in stabilizing Afghanistan.
The Russian president reiterated the need for cooperation with
Iran to settle the crises in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East.
Stressing Iran`s right to continue its peaceful nuclear program
within the framework of international treaties, he supported the
recent four-party agreement reached in Tehran meeting between the
foreign ministers of three EU countries and Iran.
"Tehran Statement has a significant effect on Iran`s continued
nuclear activities towards peaceful applications and development of
its atomic cooperation with Russia.
Putin noted that Russia is currently discussing with the
European countries its nuclear cooperation with Iran.
For his part, Rowhani said that given the historical and strategic
bilateral relations, such ties are given priority in Iran`s foreign
policy.
He noted that the current special international and regional
conditions account for the growing importance of the need for
holding dialogues and bolstering ties.
The SNSC secretary reiterated that Tehran is determined to proceed
with its peaceful nuclear activities within the framework of
international treaties.
"It does not intend to develop nuclear weapons, given they are
rejected by Iran`s doctrine," he added.
Rowhani said that Iran`s official written request for signing
of the additional protocol to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
(NPT) was submitted to the International Atomic Energy Organization
(IAEA) by Iran`s permanent representative to IAEA, Ali Akbar Salehi
on Monday.
The Russian president lauded Iran`s decision on transparency of
its nuclear program, signing of the NPT additional protocol and
provisional suspension of enrichment of its uranium.
"Iran is entitled to uranium enrichment within the framework of
NPT, but its voluntary decision on its suspension attracted the
confidence of the world community," he added.
Rowhani stressed the need for broadening of mutual ties in
various fields including regional security and stability, campaign
against terrorism and narcotics, promotion of stability and security
in iraq and return of power to the Iraqi people along with UN pivotal
role and cooperation in reconstruction of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Turning to the US threats against Iraq`s neighboring states, he
said that even if Iraq`s borders are encircled by walls, the
dilemmas facing the Americans within the boundary of the war-torn
country will not reduce.
