Iran suspends uranium enrichment program
IRNA
Moscow, Nov 10, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- Iran has suspended a uranium enrichment program, even though it has the right to it, said Hassan Rowhani, secretary of the Iran`s Supreme National Security Council. He said at his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin on Monday that Iran `has made the decision` to stop uranium enrichment in order to `eliminate all concerns and misgivings` of the international community and keep its nuclear program in the channel of international rules. Iran on no account pursues the goal of obtaining nuclear weapons, Rowhani stressed. He added that nuclear weapons are irrelevant for Iran`s defense doctrine. Rowhani told Putin that Iran would notify the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in a letter on Monday that it agrees to sign an additional protocol to the treaty on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. He said his country would act so that to win more trust from the international community. Just to create the trust, Iran has decided to sign the additional protocol, Rowhani said. He said Tehran had decided `to open` its past activity in the nuclear field to the world community and with this reasoning had answered all questions from the IAEA. Moreover, Iran has asked the IAEA to make other questions, if there are any, Rowhani said. He called Russia a `traditional historical partner` of Iran in the nuclear sphere, adding that his country always would be with its `friendly neighbor -- the Russian Federation`. Putin said at the meeting that `Iran as a full-fledged member of the international community has the full right to develop its nuclear program for peaceful purposes`. The president said he did not see `any obstacles to cooperation with Iran in the nuclear sphere`. Putin cited as three lines of Russia`s possible dialogue with Iran its opening its nuclear programs to the IAEA, signing the additional protocol and stopping the uranium enrichment program. Rowhani passed to Putin a letter from Iranian President Mohammad Khatami inviting the Russian president to visit Tehran. Putin said he would visit Iran `by all means`. According to Rowhani, Khatami counts on `thorough talks` with the Russian president. /AH/210 End
