Italy confirms Iran`s right to use nuclear energy

Rome, Nov 7, IRNA -- Director General of the International Relations Department of the Italian Foreign Ministry and official in charge of the disarmament affairs Jone Karlo Aragona said on Thursday it is a legitimate right of the Islamic Republic to use the nuclear energy. In a meeting with Iran`s Ambassador to Rome Bahram Qassemi, Aragona said Italy pays respect for the sovereignty and high standing of Iran adding that Italy confirms Iran`s legitimate right to enjoy nuclear energy. He touched on the recent remarks by Leader of the Islamic Revolution on Tehran`s nuke program and said the Leader`s support for Iranian nuclear plans were crucial and vital. Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on Tuesday strongly supported Iran`s decision to sign the NPT protocol, stressing however that Iran would fiercely stand against any attempt to challenge its peaceful nuclear program. Aragona added that Italy remains a good partner of Iran while voicing his country`s readiness to contribute to promote Tehran-EU nuclear cooperation. He said Italy attaches priority to developing ties with the Islamic countries, Iran included, and noted that the Italian officials have times and again reiterated their willingness to improved the all-out relations with Iran. He said Italy considers Iran as a regional power that can play a key role in the regional developments. Qassemi explained Iran`s attitudes on the latest developments as for the additional protocols. He said the cooperation between the Islamic Republic and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is following an upward trend adding that Iran reserves rights to enjoy the nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. He said Tehran would welcome any initiative on part of Italy to boost ties in the cultural, political, economic and trade spheres. Foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany in a meeting with Iranian officials on October 21 issued a statement aiming to settle the questions on Iran`s nuclear program and its peaceful application of nuclear technology between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Providing proper grounds for signing the Additional Protocol by Iran and provisional suspension of its uranium enrichment process were among the focal points of the agreement reflected in the final document issued at the end of the four-party negotiations termed as `Tehran Statement`.
