Iran`s doctrine not concentrated on nuclear weapons: Khatami

Tehran, Oct 21, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami here on Tuesday said the doctrine of the Islamic Republic of Iran is not concentrated on equipping the country with nuclear weapons. Addressing a seminar held on the occasion of the National Exports Day, he underlined the need for the country to become powerful in different areas of sciences, technology, and economy. "We believe that no power can be gained through access to nuclear bombs and weapons of mass destruction," he added. Referring to 1980-88 Iraqi imposed war, Khatami said the Islamic Republic never allows itself to attack other countries with chemical bombs. The Islamic Republic is not interested in gaining power for violating other nations` rights, he said, reiterating that Iran wants to be powerful in order not to be attacked by others. On economic activities of the private sector, the president stressed the role of the private sector in different kinds of activities in the country. The government is interested in further activating the private sector, he added. Private sector also plays a key role in promoting exports, he said adding that "formation of export companies" is the motto of this year`s National Exports Day. Underlining the need to pay more attention to promotion of exports, President Khatami said the government will make greater efforts to help establish powerful export companies. As to export of petrochemical products, he said over dlrs one billion worth of petrochemicals were exported during the past Iranian calendar year (ended March 20, 2003). The president predicted that the amount will reach dlrs three billion by the end of the Third Development Plan. He said some dlrs eight billion worth of non oil products will be exported by the end of the current year (March 20, 2004) and regretted however that the amount of goods imported in the first six months of the year stood at dlrs 13 billion. The president concluded by stressing the need to provide security for domestic and foreign investors.
