Iran, France, Germany, Britain discuss nuclear programs

Tehran, Oct 21, IRNA -- Iran, Germany, France and Britain discussed here Tuesday the aspects of cooperation and Iran`s peaceful nuclear activities and avenues for bolstering of cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi, in a meeting with his French, British and German counterparts Dominique de Villepin, Jack Straw and Joschka Fischer, respectively, outlined Iran`s stance and views on the country`s nuclear activities. "Iran does not seek nuclear weapons," Kharrazi said, adding "weapons of mass destruction have no place in Iran`s security and military doctrine." Kharrazi noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran believes in non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and is determined to continue the confidence-building trend with the IAEA. "Iran is committed to a Middle East free from weapons of mass destruction," the Iranian minister said, stressing "cooperation should be further strengthened in this regard." He said Iran seeks and completely has the right to use nuclear energy peacefully based on the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) adding, "Iran`s security and dignity are very important for us." Kharrazi also expressed hope that Iran benefits from technical and technological cooperation and said, "Iran has great potentials to restore peace and security in the region and welcomes cooperation and talks to this effect." Fischer, for his part, expressed hope that constructive negotiations would continue and the atmosphere of trust and cooperation would be further strengthened. Meanwhile, Villepin said his country attaches special importance to Iran`s culture, rich civilization and status and added that there are great potentials for talks. He hoped Iran and the IAEA would further strengthen cooperation. Straw also stressed the importance of expansion of talks and cooperation and highlighted Iran`s status and the need for confidence-building in international arena, adding, "Iran, as a member of the international community, plays an important role." He hoped good cooperation between the sides would bring about considerable outcomes. SF/210 End
