Khatami: Iran accepts protocol with reservation on national sovereignty right

Putrajaya, Malaysia, Oct 17, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said on Friday that Iran has never rejected negotiations with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over the additional protocol to Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and has only reservations about a single note that runs counter to national sovereignty. He told a press conference on the sidelines of the the OIC Summit, that the U.S. has had the same reservation in signing the protocol. The president reminded that before the Islamic revolution the Americans themselves had advised Iran to plan for generating 8,000 megawatts of electricity from nuclear power plants as an economical way of generation energy. Khatami noted that as a signatory to NPT, Iran is entitled to receive technical assistance from the UN Specialized aganecy and the IAEA`s charter obliges the agency to provide members with expertise, stressing that Iran respects the international safeguard standards. Asked by IRNA about the president`s view concerning this year nobel prize given to Iranian lawyer Mrs Shirin Ebadi, he said that it is "a good omen". He however referred to certain wrong approaches in evaluations either to exagerate or downgrade a matter and said one should manage to avoid going to extremes about different subjects.
