President: IAEA Board of Governors anti-Iran statement, unjust
IRNA
Tehran, Oct 8, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said on Wednesday
that the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA) statement on Iran is unjust, oppressive and an example of
aggression.
He told reporters after the cabinet meeting that nevertheless
Iran-IAEA cooperation will continue.
"However, we will do what is needed to remove the suspicion about
Iranian nuclear program," stated the president.
"The (IAEA) Board of Governors have issued the anti-Iran
resolution under political pressure," President Khatami said.
"Iran has never said that it will not accept the additional
protocol. Iran began negotiations with the IAEA in line with national
preferences," he said.
"My personal view is that acceptance of the protocol will serve
national interest. Of course, you can reject the protocol, if you
don`t worry about national interest," he said.
Asked whether or not the parliament will ratify the protocol, if
the government signed it, he said that Iran has fulfilled major part
of the protocol until now.
He said that Iran will lobby for its national nuclear program with
the international community including the Europeans and the
Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
"I believe that the Europeans look into matters away from
political considerations, though they are under the US pressure," he
said.
He said that the international organizations are the means to
support justice and advocates of the rights of all nations, so they
should not heed the political pressures and expose a country to an
unjust condemnation.
"We expect them to fulfill their obligations within the context of
international law and regulations," President Khatami said, a
reference to national grievances about the IAEA approach toward Iran.
Asked about Washington`s call for dialogue with Iran, President
Khatami said, "What kind of dialogue we may have with Washington when
it is engaged in fabricating a variety of allegations against Iran and
raising controversy about Iran`s national programs.
"The US never abandoned hostility with Iran, it is using every
leverage to exert pressure on Iran," he said.
The United States needs a change of attitude toward Iran, if it
likes to reduce the mistrust, President Khatami said.
