Abtahi: Iran`s nuclear technology peaceful, transparent
IRNA
Tehran, Oct 1, IRNA -- Iran`s nuclear technology has always been peaceful and transparent, said Vice President for Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Mohammad-Ali Abtahi after the weekly cabinet session on Wednesday. Abtahi told reporters that decision on Iran`s accession to additional protocol of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is too difficult and one of the important challenges facing the country in the post-Islamic Revolution era. He said all strata should have a share in the decision making process. He added that Majlis and government had in separate sessions discussed Iran`s accession to the additional protocol. The official hoped that the visit by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) officials to Iran is another proof to Iran`s peaceful nuclear activities` being transparent. Asked which facility the IAEA experts planned to inspect during their visit, Abtahi said based on the NPT additional protocol there is not restriction for the IAEA experts` visit. He said the visits will take place according to earlier agreements and discussions between Iran`s Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) and the IAEA. He stressed that naturally, the Agency`s inspectors should respect national dignity and individuality of countries. Asked about recent meetings of Iran`s Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi in New York, Abtahi said one of the important issues for Iran is promotion of diplomatic ties. Abtahi said, "We should inform the world of our viewpoints". He added that Kharrazi`s recent meetings in New York had been in that connection. He said that possibly an active diplomatic move would be launched to show Iran`s diplomatic stances. As for the return of Canadian Ambassador to Tehran and the process of Iranian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi`s death case, Abtahi said Kazemi`s death has been one of the catastrophe that should be investigated transparently. He said Iranian government has been showing proper sensitivity since very early stages of the case. "We call on the judiciary to deal with the case speedily; the case has been having unfavorable consequences," he added. He said there has been rumors that the Judiciary would hold an open trial on the case. He predicted that Ja`far Towfiqi would get vote of confidence from Majlis to serve as Minister of Science, Research, and Technology. 216/AH/210 End
