IAEA representatives to visit Tehran for technical, legal talks

IRNA

Tehran, Sept 27, IRNA -- Representatives of the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA) are expected to visit Tehran on Thursday to
discuss the legal and technical issues concerning non-proliferation
treaty (NPT).
Spokesman for Iran`s Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) Saber
Zaimian said that the delegation had been scheduled to visit Tehran on
Monday (September 29), but, it has been rescheduled to Thursday
(October 2).
Iran and the IAEA are at loggerhead over signing the additional
protocol to non-proliferation treaty.
"They say their program is for peaceful purpose, and if they
really have nothing to hide. It is up to them to open all their
facilities and all their books," IAEA Director General Mohamed
ElBaradei told CNN on Saturday.
"We don`t have any thing to hide, because we do not have a program
for producing nuclear weapons. Therefore, we are ready to be quite
transparent. But, we cannot let others deny our rights," Foreign
Minister Kamal Kharrazi said in New York published in Washington Post
on Thursday.
Kharrazi said that the United States, for its part, would have to
make it clear that signing the additional protocol would end the
debate over Iran`s nuclear program, a reference to the US propaganda
campaign against Iran`s national program.
Iran, a signatory state to NPT, needs to produce 8,000 megawatts
electricity from nuclear energy by setting up several power plants
until 2020.
The United States had advised to set up power plants in Iran to
produce 20,000 megawatts by the year 2003 in cooperation with the US
companies. The plan was postponed due to the Iraqi-imposed war
(1980-1988).
Iran`s Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) set up uranium enrichment
plant in Natanz to produce fuel for Bushehr power plant.
Self-sufficiency in producing fuel will make Iran independent of
Russia for supply.
