Defense Minister: WMD has no place in Iran`s defense policy
IRNA
Tehran, Sept 21, IRNA -- Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani said here Sunday that production of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) has no place in Iran`s defense policy. Shamkhani told reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony, held to appreciate services of war veterans, that Tehran does not believe that weapons of mass destruction can play as a deterrence and consider them as a threat to the region. He said the US has built up pressure on Iran to deprive it of peaceful use of nuclear technology and using its potential in the field. "Such threats (against Iran) are not something new and have emerged in different forms since the triumph of the Islamic Revolution," said Shamkhani. The Minister said that in the 25 years since the victory of Islamic Revolution, enemies have constantly spoken of toppling Iran`s ruling system in six months and have always accused the Islamic Republic of attempting to equip itself with nuclear weapons. Shamkhani said Iran is capable of producing cannons and tanks, different kinds of defensive missiles, and most sophisticated sea-to- ground missiles. He said Iran is now exporting conventional weapons to 45 countries. 216/212 End
