Spain lauds Iran`s peaceful nuclear program
IRNA
Madrid, Sept 8, IRNA -- Spanish Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ramon Gil Casares said here Monday "We have no doubt on Iran`s intentions on peaceful use of nuclear power." Meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister for Euro-American Affairs Ali Ahani, Casares urged Iran to be more transparent in its nuclear program activities "so that they leave no doubt in people`s minds." Ahani is visiting Madrid to hand a message from President Khatami to Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar. Casares said Tehran is a stable friend in an unstable region and called on Tehran to play an important role in establishing stability in the region. The two officials also discussed other issues including Iran-European Union (EU) ties, Iraq crisis and ways of cooperation between Iran and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Ahani said Iran is keen to enjoy its legitimate right for peaceful use of nuclear power and has constructive cooperation with the nuclear watchdog body. He further expressed hope the IAEA governing council would avoid politicization of the issue and "assume a realistic outlook in regard to the Iranian nuclear program which should pave the ground for the acceptance of the additional protocol to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) by Iran." He expressed concern on deteriorating security situation in Iraq saying that the onus is on the occupying powers to prevent such incidents. Ahani also said Iran wants to see an Iraq that is stable, peaceful and enjoys a democratic and popular-based government. "Iran will spare no efforts in this regard," he added. NB/214 End
