Iran`s defensive strategy has no room for nuclear weapons
IRNA
Tehran, Aug 31, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- Iran understands certain concerns about its nuclear program but would like to assure the world community that the Iranian defense strategy has no place reserved for nuclear weapons, Iranian President Sayed Mohammad Khatami told EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana during a meeting on Saturday evening. The Iranian president criticized some nuclear powers for their policy of double standards. "We support the establishment of fair peace and the promotion of dialogue among civilizations. We are calling for the elimination of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East and we are against its use and accumulation as contradicting the Islamic principles and moral values," Khatami went on to say. At the same time, Khatami noted that Iran had the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. In turn, Javier Solana expressed the hope that the human rights problem and nuclear energy wouldn`t influence the development of relations between the European Union and Iran. He added that the EU was interested in hearing Iran`s view on prospects for the signing of a supplementary document to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The European Union`s foreign policy chief believes that the two sides will give a new impetus to their cooperation if they manage to settle the nuclear issue. /FM/210 End
