MP: Iran-IAEA cooperation should follow its natural course
IRNA
Tehran, Aug 30, IRNA -- Head of National Security and Foreign Policy Commission at Majlis Mohsen Mirdamadi said here on Saturday that Iran`s cooperation with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should follow its natural course. Mirdamadi told visiting European Union (EU) Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana here that insistence on accelerating such cooperation might bear reverse results. He stressed Iran`s peaceful use of nuclear technology and said Tehran has no inclination to use the technology for military purposes. He added that Iran has fully cooperated with the IAEA and is quite ready to hold talks on the Agency`s additional protocol. The parliamentarian referred to the arrest of Iran`s former envoy to Argentina Hadi Soleimanpour by British police, saying that the issue might have adverse effect on Iran-Argentina ties as well as the country`s relations with the EU. He urged Solana to do his best to solve the issue in a favorable manner. He strongly deplored assassination of the Head of the Supreme Assembly of Islamic Revolution in Iraq (IAEA) Ayatollah Mohammad Baqer Hakim in Najaf on Friday and said growing instability and insecurity in Iraq is alarming. He added that the only way to handle the issue is the pivotal role of the UN in Iraq and all countries` cooperation with the UN to speedily solve problems in Iraq. The official said, "Iraq`s administration is needed to be ceded to the Iraqi people, otherwise insecurity would continue unabated in the country at alarming pace." Solana too deplored strongly the assassination of Ayatollah Hakim and said the UN should play a more active role in Iraq. He stressed Iran`s important status in the region and its right for peaceful use of nuclear energy, praising Iran`s cooperation with the IAEA. He called for further transparency in Iran`s nuclear activities and hoped that Iran`s decisions would improve its relations with the EU. He referred to the arrest of Soleimanpour and said Iran and Argentina should cooperate to peacefully solve the sensitive issue. 216/212 End
