FM says Iran not after getting access to nuclear weapons
IRNA
Tehran, August 30, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi on Saturday said Iran was not pursuing efforts to reach the nuclear weapons while adding that Tehran`s nuclear activities were purely of peaceful nature. In a meeting with the European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Javier Solana here, Kharrazi said there is no room for the atomic weaponry in Iran`s defense doctrine. According to the Press and Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kharrazi stressed the need for efforts and measures to strengthen the regional and global peace and stability. Kharrazi touched on the upcoming session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) governing board and said Iran expects the IAEA not to taken decisions without thorough investigation into the facts in Iran. He called on the IAEA to stay clear of the political pressures to take unmeasured decisions. Kharrazi said Iran is well determined to go ahead with its cooperation with the IAEA while saying that Iran reserves the right to enjoy the nuclear technology and would not ignore developing its nuke programs for peaceful purposes. He noted that Iran plans to generate most of the energy it needs through the nuclear-fuelled power stations while reiterating that the country remains committed to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Elsewhere he commented on the situation in Iraq and expressed regret and indignation over the inhuman assassination of top Shiite cleric Ayatollah Hakim in the war-shattered nation. He said the enemies of Iraq are after intensifying tension in that country to be able to fish in troubled waters and to guarantee their own interests. Ayatollah Mohammad Baqer al-Hakim was killed Friday in a car bomb in the central city of Najaf. Hakim, who spent some 20 years in exile in Iran before returning in triumph to Iraq earlier this year, met a martyr`s fate along with his bodyguards. Hakim`s assassination took place as he was returning from Najaf Friday prayer which he himself had led. As for Afghanistan, Kharrazi called on the international community to pay more attention to Afghanistan saying security and development are interconnected and influence Afghan economy. He said the world community has to play a more active part in the reconstruction of Afghanistan. On the Middle East peace process Kharrazi said a fair peace is possible in the region only through the restoration of the inalienable rights of the Palestinians to them. Solana termed as irresponsible the assassination of Ayatollah Hakim in Iraq and said the EU calls for the United Nations to play more crucial part in establishing peace in Iraq. He said restoration of peace and stability to Afghanistan is top on the EU`s agenda. On Iran`s nuclear activities, he hoped that the Tehran-IAEA talks would produce fruitful results. HB/214 End
