Kharrazi says Iran nuclear programme is peaceful, indigenous

IRNA

Islamabad, Aug 29, IRNA - Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi
Friday said Iran`s nuclear programme is totally peaceful, adding that
the programme is neither meant for nuclear weapons nor a part of
Tehran`s security doctrine.
"Iran is for nuclear free zones in Middle East and South Asian
region," Kharrazi told a joint news conference in Islamabad with his
Pakistani counterpart Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri.
Replying to a number of questions on Iran`s nuclear programme, he
said it is totally indigenous.
"As there are rumours against Pakistan for cooperation with Iran,
there are also rumours of cooperation between Iran and India in the
nuclear field."
The Iranian foreign minister said the Islamic Republic had
acquired some equipment for enrichment facilities from outside.
"Iran had allowed IAEA inspectors in recent weeks and they
visited all the sites they wanted and took environmental samples from
some of the sites."
He said IAEA is supervising all their nuclear activities and that
Tehran is not objecting to more severe inspections by the IAEA.
He also said Iran would support sending troops to Iraq if it has
UN cover suggesting the US government shall transfer the Iraqi
administration to the United Nations.
When asked about Iranian position over Russian desire to join the
OIC, he said a decision over joining of any new member had to be taken
with the consensus of all members of the Organization.
He said Iran would not mind if Russian becomes an Observer in the
OIC as they have a large number of Muslims.
The Iranian foreign minister said, "We have decided to promote
further economic cooperation as well as regional cooperation for
economic development in the region.
To another question, he said Iran has good relations with both
Pakistan and India, saying Iran is interested that both India and
Pakistan should engage in negotiations to resolve their disputes.
