IRNA
Tokyo, Aug 28, IRNA -- Iran`s Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi here Thursday stressed that Tehran was pursuing peaceful nuclear programs. Talking to reporters following his talks with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, Kharrazi said he had discussed bilateral ties, the situation in Iraq, the issue of Afghanistan as well as the current crisis in the Middle East with the japanese prime minister. He said he had also briefed Koizumi on Iran`s nuclear plans. Kharrazi further reiterated that Tehran was to start negotiations with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to join the additional protocol. According to the foreign minister, talks were still going on between Iran and Japan on Azadegan oil field. "Since Iran is a major producer of crude oil and Japan is a good customer," Kharrazi noted, "Tokyo`s investment in the oil field would guarantee its access to energy sources." Kharrazi arrived here on Wednesday evening at the head of a politico-economic delegation on the third leg of a three-nation tour which also took him to India and china. He is also scheduled to hold talks with Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi and members of Japanese parliament`s presiding board and of Iran-Japan parliamentary friendship group on regional and international cooperation. Iran`s foreign minister had visited Japan in January 2001 to take part in the international seminar on contribution to Afghan reconstruction and to hold talks with Japanese officials. Kawaguchi also paid a visit to Iran in May 2002. Kharrazi is to leave Japan on Friday. 1424/217 End
