Kharrazi: No room for nuclear arms in Iran`s defense doctrine

Tokyo, Aug 28, IRNA -- Visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi in a meeting with Japan`s Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi here Wednesday reiterated that there is no place for nuclear arms in Iran`s defense doctrine. He also outlined Iran`s policy of establishing peace and stability in the region and said Iran was merely exercising its right for peaceful use of nuclear energy. He also voiced Tehran`s determination to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Pointing to the history and potentials of Iran and Japan, Kharrazi noted that Tehran was willing to expand relations with Tokyo and said Japan`s political independence played a positive role in this regard. He also referred to Iran`s high economic growth rate as well as the active presence of Japanese companies in Iran, saying that there are numerous areas of cooperation between the two countries. The foreign minister also referred to the Middle East crisis as a very serious problem facing the region and said that peace will be established in the region only when the rights of the Palestinian nation are fully observed. He also termed as "very complex" situation in Iraq and stated that the Iraqi nation would never surrender to aliens` domination. He stressed that the occupying forces should immediately leave Iraq and let the Iraqi people decide on their own fate. He believed the occupying forces should never mistake the Iraqi nation`s hatred of Saddam Hossein for their desire to welcome aliens in their country. Elaborating on Tehran`s position regarding current situation in Iraq, Kharrazi said Iran welcomes Japan`s contribution to resolving critical situation in Iraq as well as in its reconstruction efforts. The Japanese prime minister, for his part, stressed the fact that it was the established right of every country to make peaceful use of nuclear technology. Koizumi said Tokyo considers cooperation between Tehran and the IAEA as very important. He further noted that Iran played a key role in establishing peace and stability in the region. Evaluating as "positive" the growing trend of Tehran-Tokyo ties, he believed that friendly ties would be beneficial to both countries. Saying that Japan was determined to expand relations with Iran in political, economic and cultural areas, he said Tokyo was keen to use Tehran`s experiences. Pointing to the current situation in Iraq, the Japanese prime minister said that the international community should work more rapidly in reconstructing the country. Kharrazi arrived here on Wednesday evening at the head of a politico-economic delegation on the third leg of a three-nation tour which also took him to India and china. He is also scheduled to hold talks with Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi and members of Japanese parliament`s presiding board and of Iran-Japan parliamentary friendship group on regional and international cooperation. 1424/212 End
