Iran voices allegiance to Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
Tehran, July 21, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- Iran has voiced again its
allegiance to provisions of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and
rejected allegations about a possibility of its withdrawal from the
Treaty, as well as conventions concerning the signing of the
additional protocol.
Hamid Reza Asefi, official spokesman for the Iranian Foreign
Ministry, said on Monday, "It is quite natural that different
viewpoints and different opinions exist in free society."
He had in mind the recent publication in the Kayhan newspaper,
which suggested that Iran withdraw from the Treaty.
"It is true the Treaty has a provision permitting its signatories
to withdraw from it, but Iran does not have such plans. We believe it
would be in line with everybody's interests, if the international
Atomic Energy Agency and the countries -- signatories to the Treaty,
chose the path of confidence-building and demonstrated in this way the
transparency of their nuclear programs," he said.
"So far as the signing of the additional protocol by Iran is
concerned, the answer to the question will give a national decision,
based on the unanimous opinion of the Supreme Council for National
Security and of the Iranian parliament," he added.
