Iran, Russia slam third countries politicizing their nuclear cooperation
IRNA
Moscow, May 27, IRNA -- Iranian Ambassador to Russia Gholamreza Shafei
and Russian Atomic Energy Minister Alexander Rumyantsev in a meeting
here Monday rebuffed efforts at politicizing Tehran-Moscow nuclear
cooperation by third countries.
Several officials of both countries' energy organization were also
present in the meeting in which the focus was on cooperation on
peaceful use of nuclear energy between Tehran and Moscow.
The topics discussed included progress in construction of Bushehr
uclear power plant, Iran's nuclear program, timely implementation of
signed protocols and exploring ways of future cooperation between
Tehran and Moscow.
Iranian side described the role of domestic industry in furnishing
facilities and machinery used in various phases of nuclear energy.
Also, Iran's commitments regarding existing international norms
as well as efforts to coordinate policies with the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in peaceful use of nuclear energy were
further stressed by the two sides.
Expansion of Iran's nuclear energy program as grounds for closer
bilateral relations in other areas were also discussed.
Earlier in May, Rumyantsev said that Russia does not intend to
halt its nuclear cooperation with Iran.
Speaking to Interfax news agency, the Russian minister emphasized,
"Iran has so far been fully committed to the signed contracts, as well
as the international rules and regulations regarding the use of the
nuclear energy."
Rumyanstev added, "There is no logical reason why we should be
speaking about halting Russia's cooperation with Iran in nuclear
field."
The Russian atomic energy ministry meanwhile rejected the US
officials' accusation regarding Iran's intention on using nuclear
energy for military purposes.
The US Secretary of State Colin Powell in a recent visit to Moscow
once again informed the Russian officials of "Washington's serious
concern regarding the process of Iran's nuclear plans."
Upon return to Washington he said that Moscow shares Washington's
concerns regarding Iran's suspicious nuclear activities.
Iran has strongly rejected US claims that Tehran was on the track
to produce nuclear arms.
