VOICED AT:
INTRO: American Jewish leaders are reacting angrily
to the conviction and sentencing of 10 Jews in Iran
for spying for Israel. Correspondent Larry Freund
reports from New York.
TEXT: The coordinating organization for American
Jewish groups says it is outraged at what it calls the
injustice of the verdicts announced in Iran Saturday.
A court in Shiraz sentenced 10 of the 13 Jewish
defendants in the month-long trial to prison terms of
up to 13 years. Two Muslims accused of being
accomplices were given two-year sentences while three
Jewish defendants and two Muslims were acquitted.
President Clinton said he was deeply disturbed by the
verdicts.
At a news conference on the street near Iran's mission
to the United Nations, the executive vice president of
the Jewish leadership group, Malcolm Hoenlein, said it
was Iran that was found guilty of, what he termed -
gross violations of human rights and rejecting the
rule of law.
Mr. Hoenlein said the verdicts put the lie to what he
described as the mythology of moderation in Iran.
            /// HOENLEIN ACT ///
      Iran, we declare to you today that the world is
      watching. You have seen the statements of world
      leaders. They have declared that future
      relations with Iran will be dependent upon the
      outcome of this trial. And we assure you we
      will re-double our efforts and pursue every
      avenue to help bring an end to this injustice.
            /// END ACT ///
Several members of the U-S congress appeared at the
news conference, including Congressman Anthony Weiner,
who said they were introducing legislation to prevent
the relaxation of economic measures against Iran.
            /// WEINER ACT ///
      If there is one last chance for Iran in terms of
      its moderation, in terms of its relations with
      this country, it is that the appeals court, to
      show that it is not a sham like the lower court
      was, to allow these Shiraz 10, now, to go free.
            /// END ACT ///
Iran has accused foreign critics of the verdicts of
unacceptable interference in its internal affairs.
