Text: Albright Statement on the Trial of Iranian Jews
(Albright Criticizes The Trial Of Iranian Jews) (260) The following is the text of Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's statement on the trial of 10 Iranian Jews. (begin text) US DEPARTMENT OF STATE OFFICE of the Spokesman For Immediate Release July 1, 2000 STATEMENT BY SECRETARY OF STATE MADELEINE ALBRIGHT ON IRAN TRIAL I am deeply concerned by the convictions of 10 Iranian Jews today, in a trial process that international human rights groups, the United States and many other nations around the world have recognized as seriously flawed. I share the deep disappointment of the families of the defendants. The defendants were imprisoned for over a year without a trial, were denied access to counsel of their choice, and were tried in secret proceedings. Trial procedures in Iran's revolutionary courts shave been criticized both in Iran and around the world. The annual reports of the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees' Special Rapporteur and the State Department's Human Rights Report have made this clear. These Iranian Jews are only the latest victim of such proceedings, which have included intellectual, journalists, members of the Bah'ai minority, Muslim clerics and others. We call on Iranian authorities to make available immediately a means to remedy these shortcomings and to carefully review other cases in which such illegitimate procedures have resulted in unjust imprisonment. In addition, we call on the international community to join our call for a clear and unambiguous condemnation of this verdict.
