MAJOR SHIPMENT OF RUSSIAN NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY SEIZED EN ROUTE TO IRAN
ISRAEL LINE FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 1998
Azerbaijan's customs authority confiscated a large shipment of Russian
nuclear technology en route to Iran on March 22, YEDIOT AHARONOT reported.
According to an Azerbaijani spokesperson, 22 tons of ballistic missile
parts were seized at the border crossing between Azerbaijan and Iran. The
spokesperson said that the customs police discovered the nature of the
shipment because its radiation level was very high and the contents did not
match its certificates.
He added that Russia has begun investigating the matter and made several
arrests of people in connection with the shipment. Russian authorities
notified Israel that they have arrested several Tadjikistani citizens.
Israel Radio, KOL YISRAEL, reported that Government officials are expected
to discuss Russia's assistance to Iran's long-range missile program with
United States Vice President Al Gore when he visits Israel next week.
Government officials said that Israel is finding it difficult convincing the
American government to impose sanctions on Russia in order to bring a stop
to its aid to Iran.
