MORDECHAI ESTABLISHES TEAM TO ANALYZE IRANIAN THREAT

FRIDAY, JANUARY 16, 1998
Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai established a special team to analyze
the internal developments in, and the threats posed by, Iran, HA'ARETZ
reported. Mordechai's chief assistant, David Ivri, who directs a separate
group formulating Israel's response to the Iranian threat, will head the new
team.
The Defense Ministry noted four objections to Iranian policy which will
guide Israel's attitude toward Iran: Iran's supply of weapons to Hizbullah,
support of terrorism against Israel, objection to the peace process and
non-recognition of Israel. The latter three points are the basis for
Israel's ongoing dialogue with the United States concerning the Iranian threat.
Professor Angelo Kodwila has conducted research on the Arrow anti-missile
missile at Jerusalem's Institute of Strategic and Advanced Political
Studies, and concluded that the Arrow is not capable of defending against
the missiles currently being developed by Iran.
The research shows that Iran is developing missiles that would enter
Israel's air space at twice the speed of the targets the Arrow missile would
be able to destroy. Kodwila says that the solution to this problem lies in
the development of a more advanced Arrow missile.
