MOST IRAQI FORCES OUT OF IRAN, U.N. REPORTS
During a five-day period in mid-August almost all Iraqi forces withdrew to its side of the internationally- recognized boundary with Iran, according to a U.N. report released September 24.
In a report to the Security Council on the operation of the U.N. Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group (UNIMOG), Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar said "the withdrawal of all forces to the internationally recognized boundaries is almost complete," with only a few locations left where Iraqi and Iranian troops remain on the wrong side of the border.
Nevertheless, the secretary general recommended that the council extend the mandate for the 402-member U.N. observer unit another two months, until November 30, noting: "This will permit UNIMOG to complete its tasks related to the withdrawal of all forces to the internationally recognized boundaries and will allow time for the parties and the Security Council to judge whether there is a continuing requirement for an impartial third party to monitor the cease-fire on the internationally recognized boundaries."
