India successfully test-fires its own anti-aircraft missile - media

23 April 2014, 21:13 -- On Wednesday India successfully test-fired its own supersonic surface-to-air Akash missile, local media reports. The launch was carried out from the test range at Chandipur in Odisha. The Akash missiles successfully hit an unmanned aircraft, Lakshya.

The Akash-class missiles, weighing more than 700 kilograms and capable of carrying up to 55 kilograms of payload, can fly at a speed exceeding sound velocity by 2.5 times, and have a 25-km range. The weapon was previously tested in February this year.

The Indian short-range Akash system is aimed at filling the gap in air defense in the protection of both air defense facilities and army units. The developer of the Akash system is the Defense Research and Development Organization of the Indian Defense Ministry, which began its work on the new air defense system in the middle of the 1980s. The Akash system includes a multifunctional radar station, a fire control center, communications and support vehicles, and also mobile launch platforms.
