Indian forces remove some bunkers from Srinagar

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Srinagar, India, Oct 5, IRNA -- The process of removing sixteen of some two hundred bunkers of paramilitary CRPF from the heavily militarized capital city of Kashmir began on Tuesday.

This is part of the central government's eight-point peace initiative announced last month, official sources said.

The decision to remove 16 bunkers was taken during the Unified Headquarters meeting on Sept. 29 in Srinagar.

Meanwhile CRPF spokesman Prabhakar Tripathy said that so far eight of the sixteen bunkers have been removed and remaining would be removed in coming few days.

He however made it clear that removal of bunkers does not in any way mean lessening the number of CRPF personnel from the city.

Tripathy told IRNA that the CRPF personnel of the dismantled bunkers would be redeployed elsewhere in the city.
