Tension Mounts in Kashmir as two more boys killed in Sopore

Srinagar, India, June 26, IRNA -- Massive protests have erupted in north Kashmir town of Sopore after two more Kashmiri boys were killed in indiscriminate firing by the federal police Friday.

According to the reports reaching here protests were continuing even after dusk had set in and All Parties Hurriyat Conference has now given a call for people from across Kashmir to march to Sopore, 52 kms north of here, to join protests there.

Police said federal police opened indiscriminate firing on a group of demonstartors protesting against the killing of two militants in a gunbattle there with Indian army earlier in the day.

"Protesters hurled stones and tried to overturn a federal police vehicle prompting the soldiers to open fire" police said, adding two protestors, 15-year-old Shakeel Ahmad and 21- year-old Firdaus Ahamd died instantly.

Five more were injured of whom condition of at least three was stated to be critical in hospital.

Todays killings have taken the death toll in recent months to nine.

Tensions have been running high in Kashmir for past few months after three youth were shot dead on Line of Control. The killing of three youth dubbed as militants by Indian military had sparked a wave of anti India protests and strikes that left three more youth dead.

Todays incident came while Kashmir was observing a general strike against what they call as cold blooded murder and subsequent arrest of hundreds of youth for taking part in demonstrations to protest these killings.

Hurriyat Conference has now called for another day of strike on Saturday and march to Sopore on Monday.
