India, Canada civil nuclear energy deal on card during PM's visit

New Delhi, June 23, IRNA -- India and Canada are likely to ink a number of agreements including one on Civil Nuclear Energy cooperation during the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s visit to Canada.
The Prime Minister will have bilateral talks with his Canadian Counterpart Stephen Harper on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Toronto on Sunday.
“The two countries have made considerable progress on a host of areas on economic and commerce, science and technology, agriculture and civil nuclear cooperation”, said Vivek Katju, Secretary West in the Ministry of External Affairs, in New Delhi in a press briefing.
He said, both countries have achieved progress in these areas and another agreement on social security is also on the anvil. Katju said, MoUs on minning, higher education, and culture are also likely to be signed by New Delhi and Ottawa during the prime minister's visit to Toronto.
Katju said, the report on the Kanishka air tragedy is being studied and pointed out that due attention was not given to the extremist angle of the incident prior and after the incident.
Meanwhile, briefing the media on the Prime Minister’s visit to the G20, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said, the Prime Minister will also hold talks with leaders of the participating countries in the summit.
Ms. Rao said the Prime Minister’s delegation include Deputy Chairman of the Planning Montek Singh Ahluwalia who is the G20 Sherpa from India and National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon.
She said, the Toronto summit with the theme “Recovery and New Beginnings” will review the implementation of the decisions taken in the previous G-20 summits and give direction to the global economic recovery.
