India launches 3rd indigenous naval destroyer

New Delhi, April 2, IRNA -- India Thursday launched its 3rd indigenous naval destroyer, "INS Chennai " at a function in Mumbai.

The ship built under the code name of project 15 Alpha measures 163 meters in length and is propelled by four gas turbines, designed to achieve speed very fast.

The indigenously designed ship will have the state of the art weapons and censors with stealth features.

The ship will be fitted with the supersonic Brahmos Suface-to-surface missile system which will enable the ship to engage shore based and naval surface targets at long range.

Speaking on the occasion, the Defence Minister, A. K. Antony said, the role of the navy is continuously evolving and changing.

He said India should have indigenous warship manufacturing capability and added that the country cannot depend on foreign shipyards.

The Defence Minister said that post 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, the security of the coast lines cannot be ignored.

The Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Nirmal Verma was present on the occasion.
