Congress-led UPA sets to form government

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

New Delhi, May 16, IRNA -- As the trends received for the 543 seats of Lok Sabha (Lower House of the Indian Parliament) elections, Congress-led UPA surged ahead in the race for power in the world's largest democracy, India.

Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) is well ahead of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in trends received from across India.

As the trends received for 543 seats in the Lok Sabha elections as counting of votes in the Lok Sabha elections was taken up Saturday morning, the UPA is leading in 242, BJP in 163, Left-led Third Front in 92, Fourth Front in 33 and others in 13 seats.

With 272 seats needed for a majority in the 545-member lower house of parliament, the president will likely invite the biggest party or group to form a government, giving it momentum to win over allies.

Meanwhile BJP virtually conceded defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.

"Trends are not on expected lines. It is little disappointing. We concede UPA is ahead," said BJP spokesperson, Balbir Punj.

Communist Party of India (CPI) ruled out supporting a Congress-led government, saying it will sit in opposition if people's mandate was not for forming a non-BJP, non-Congress at the center.

"We are not with Congress party either at the end of the day or at beginning of the day. If the mandate is not for us to form a non-BJP, non-Congress government, alright, then we will sit in the opposition," said D Raja while talking to reporters here.
