People of India votes for secular govt: PM

New Delhi, May 16, IRNA -- Visibly pleased with the emphatic win of the Congress-led UPA in Lok Sabha (Lower House of the Indian Parliament) elections 2009, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday said, "People of India voted for secular government.
Talking to media in New Delhi, Dr. Singh urged all secular forces to join hands in this hour of crisis to stand united.
The prime minister said that all secular parties have an obligation to provide a stable and secular government to the people of India. He invited all such parties -– read SP, RJD -- to help in government formation forgetting past disputes and promised to work with them in a spirit of comradeship.
Reaching out to the opposition he said, "We invite all opposition parties to come together at this time when the world is passing through a time of great difficulty to convey to the world that we stand united."
He thanked the people for reposing faith in his government and its policies, adding that the people of India has spoken and spoken very clearly. Eventually, the people of India know what is good for them.
Meanwhile, Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi made it clear that Dr. Manmohan Singh will be the prime minister of the new government.
Thanking the people for reposing their confidence in UPA in the general elections, she said that the people of India knows what is good for them.
Posing to the media together with Dr. Manmohan Singh, the beaming Sonia Gandhi said that the new government will fulfill the promises made to the people.
The Congress-led UPA is all set to retain power at the Center putting up an impressive performance.
