India successfully test fires 'BrahMos' missile

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

New Delhi, March 4, IRNA -- India on Wednesday successfully test fired the new version of cruise missile 'BrahMos' in Pokhran at the Rajasthan desert.

The missile 'took two-and-a half-minutes' to strike its target, after its launch, said Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) sources.

On January 20, it took off successfully but deviated from its path and landed far away from its target.

The missile, which takes its name from the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers, has a nearly 300 km range and carries a 300 kg conventional warhead. It can achieve speeds of up to 2.8 Mach or nearly three times the speed of sound.

BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited was established in India as a joint venture through an inter-governmental agreement signed between India and Russia in February 1998.
