India, Russia sign Nuclear cooperation agreement

India and Russia Friday signed an agreement on civil nuclear cooperation that marks a new milestone in the history of Indo-Russia bilateral relations.
The agreement was signed by Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh and the visiting Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in New Delhi.
Under the agreement, Russia will build four additional atomic reactors in the Koodankulam nuclear plant in Tamil Nadu.
"The signing of the agreement on civil nuclear cooperation with Russia marks a new milestone in the history of our cooperation with Russia in the field of nuclear energy," Singh told a joint press conference with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who is on a three- day visit in New Delhi.
Besides signing a joint declaration, India and Russia also signed ten agreements on cooperation in various subjects including tourism and space.
Singh, after signing a joint declaration with Medvedev, said both the countries have taken "yet another step forward" through joint action in human space flight program.
Observing that both countries have decided to increase the trade volume to USD 10 billion by 2010, the Prime Minister said they discussed the possibilities of greater cooperation between Indian and Russian companies, both in upstream and down stream sectors.
"We also agreed to increase defence cooperation," he said.
Noting that people of India have a "great goodwill" for Russia, Singh said New Delhi "appreciated" Moscow's expression of solidarity with the country after the Mumbai terror attacks.
Earlier, the Russian President was accorded the Ceremonial Reception at the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidential Palace) this morning.
The External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherji also called on him in the morning.
Medvedev will meet the Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari, Leader of the Opposition L K Advani and the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
In the evening, Medvedev, along with President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, will attend the closing ceremony of the 'Year of Russia in India. He will later attend a Banquet hosted by Patil.
Russian President Dmitri Medvedev arrived in New Delhi on Thursday night on his maiden visit to India to renew ties between the two countries and discuss ways to take the relationship forward and strengthen cooperation, particularly against terrorism.
He was received at the airport by Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma.
