Five Naval personnel have been killed and three injured critically in a major tragedy during a Naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal Friday evening.

The accident occurred on board the Indian Navy's latest acquisition INS 'Jalseva'. The ship was taking part in the Naval exercises between Visakhapatanam and Port Blair, when the mishap took place, an All India Radio (AIR) report said here quoting Navy spokesman.

The reason for the accident is believed to be a gas leak from within a compartment of the ship which occurred last evening. This seems to have led to the blast resulting in the death of five Indian Navy personnel.

The three injured have been airlifted to Indian Naval Hospital Ship, Kalyani. They are undergoing treatment now.

The Navy rushed its medical ship to treat the injured and to bring back the serious cases to Port Blair. A board of inquiry has been constituted in the incident. INS Jalseva, a ship landing dock previously called USS TRETON, was acquired from the US Navy just a month ago.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister A K Antony has expressed his deep regret over the loss of lives in the incident.
