India-US Nuke Deal-CPM
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) in its Central Committee meeting on Saturday made clear that it will not let the Indo-US nuclear deal be implemented, irrespective of the consultations with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The curt caveat comes a day ahead of the announcement of results in Gujarat.
M K Pandhe, CPI(M) Politburo member said, "The party's stand on nuclear deal is very clear, that in no case will we allow it to be operationalized. That stand has not changed," Zeenews portal reported here.
"Whatever the outcome of negotiations at the IAEA, we will not allow the Indo-US nuclear deal to be operationalized," he said emerging out of the CPI(M)`s Central Committee meeting.
Sitaram Yechury, senior Politburo member of CPI(M) said, "There was no communication from the government on IAEA during the Left-UPA meet."
The final day of the three-day meeting, which began on Thursday, was held to finalize the party's stance on economic, foreign and other policy issues ahead of the party congress next year.
The hardening of stand can be interpreted as the Left going back on its initial stand of opposing the nuclear deal with the US tooth and nail.
The interim relief that the government got when the Left allowed it to initiate talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency, may have been stop gap as the CPI(M) did not want to destabalize the government just ahead of Gujarat elections, where BJP was a strong contender. The CPI(M) has maintained that it is equally opposed to the 'communal BJP' and 'imperial US'.
Earlier, the CPI(M) had said that they would not make any statements on the nuke deal. However with the election process in Gujarat virtually over, it must have decided otherwise.
