India-Astra Missile-Test Fires
India's first "Beyond Visual Range" air-to-air missile, Astra, was successfully test fired from the Interim Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Orissa Sunday.

The single stage, 3.8 meter long missile uses solid fuel propellant and can reach a maximum of 25 kilometer altitude, said an All India Radio (AIR) report.

The indigenous Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) built Astra missile uses a terminal active radar-seeker to find targets beyond its visibility.

The on-board ultramodern capability allows the missile to join enemy radar signals, making it most lethal weapon in the Indian Air Force (IAF) armory.

The 158 kilogram missile will be test fired, several rounds, before confirming all its parameter's, worked as per expectations of defence scientists.
