IAF Chief says Close watch needed on "intentions" of neighbors

Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief, Air Marshal, S P Tyagi while emphasizing that economic growth of a country is linked to peace and security, said, a close watch had to be maintained on the "intentions" of neighbors for strategic reasons.
"Economic growth is not possible without peace and stability...
Nowhere in the world it has been heard historically that there can be economic growth without the presence of military which provides peace and stability," he said at a function here organized for release of the book 'South Asia Defence and Strategic Year Book' by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
Underlining that the job of military is prevention of war, he said defence forces can actually be utilized to provide peace and stability that is needed for economic growth.
"All military leaders need to know what is happening in the neighborhood, especially what is happening in the military field in the neighborhood," Air Marshal Tyagi said.
"We can have a friendly but militarily strong country nearby. We have to keep a watch as to what are the intentions of the neighbors, who generally are the friends," he said, noting that "intentions do change, circumstances do change."
He said that watch was needed because it takes years and decades to build a military strength.
"It is applicable, not only to India, but all countries. So military leaders have to keep a close watch," Air Marshal Tyagi said.
