Border Security Forces of India Director General A K Mitra has said that Pakistan has been building bunkers and other defense structures across the 'relatively quiet' border.

"While it is true that border is relatively quiet, Pakistan has used this lull to build its defense structures like pill boxes and bunkers from where small arms can be fired," he told reporters in Jammu.

Mitra, however said that 'these are not offensive structures and are not going to affect us' DD News said.

Replying a question about 'bandh' (raised structure) being built by Pakistan across Jammu border, he said, "We have referred it to the Survey Commission to demarcate the borders but Pakistan is not yet prepared for the survey.

"Once the survey is done, it can be found out as to who has encroached the area."

On the general security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir, Mitra said that there has been a decline in infiltration as compared to previous years, but there has been an increase in violent incidents, especially in the Kashmir Valley.

To a question on surveillance along the borders, the BSF chief said, "We have recently acquired hand-held thermal imagers (HHTIS) which are effective during day and night and in any climatic conditions."

Already 600 such sets have been given to the troops and 1,000 more were being procured, he said, adding, "We have also night vision devices and are procuring battlefield surveillance radars." He also said there were plans to acquire fast attack craft which is fully armored and can carry both defensive and offensive operations.
