An air trial with the pilotless target aircraft to test target location and precision firing by pilots of Jaguar and Mirage 2000 fighter jets of the IAF (Indian Air Force) was conducted over the Bay of Bengal near to Chandipur.

The pilotless target aircraft named Lakshya, was used as a support system providing the target for the exercise, defense sources said.

The Lakshya was test flown from the launch complex number 2 of the integrated test range (ITR) at about 11.15 am, DD News said here.

Lakshya, already inducted into the IAF in 2000, is a subsonic re-usable aerial target system and is remote-controlled from the ground.

It is designed to train both air-borne and air-defense pilots for weapon engagement, they said.
