With the India-US nuclear deal endorsed by the House of Representatives, China today said both countries should abide by the existing non-proliferation rules and contribute to the international community's efforts in this regard.
"The United States and India should work under the international non-proliferation mechanism in their nuclear cooperation," PTI report said here quoting Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao.
China believes international nuclear cooperation can be carried out or peaceful use and concerned countries should fulfill their international obligations, Liu said.
"Relevant cooperation should abide by international regulations, and contribute to the international efforts of non-proliferation," the spokesman said.
The 435-member House of Representatives had overwhelmingly voted for the bill providing greater access of sensitive nuclear technology to India after defeating potential deal-breaker amendments.
It will now go to the US Senate for approval before being signed into a law by President George W Bush.
China had expressed reservations on the agreement in the past, saying India had not yet inked the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The People's Daily, the ruling Communist party's mouthpiece, and other official Chinese media had earlier criticized the deal, saying it would jeopardize the international community's non-proliferation efforts.
