India-Strategic Program-Review
The status of the country's strategic weapons program and the recent spurt in terrorist violence came up for review on Saturday with Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee chairing a high-level meeting of officials of National Security Advisory Council, intelligence agencies and defense forces here.

The meeting, which comes in the wake of stepped-up violence unleashed by Pakistani militant groups on Indian soil, was attended by National Security Advisor M K Narayanan, sources said here.

Though officials were tightlipped, sources said that the 90-minute meeting, which was preceded by a one-on-one meeting between Mukherjee and Narayanan, took stock of the terrorist infiltration situation along the Line of Control and measures to deal with terrorist violence on soft targets in Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere in the country.

The meeting, the sources said, also took stock of strategic weapons program specially the setback to the missile program with the failure of maiden test firing of India's most powerful surface-to- surface 3,500-km range Agni-III.

Undaunted by the failure, the government has already made up its mind to conduct fresh trials of the missile, after defense scientists pinpoint and rectify the technical problems in the weapon system.
