The first Indo-US high-level meeting on civilian nuclear programs based on the July 18, 2005 landmark agreement inked by the two sides concluded Friday evening in Mumbai.

According to Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), the meeting was held for endorsing the ongoing cooperation in various areas, including high energy nuclear physics.

The 18-member US delegation was led by the Acting Director of office of Nuclear Energy Science and Technology of the US Department of Energy, R Shane Johnson while the 12-member Indian delegation was headed by Dr R B Grover, Director, Strategic Planning Group of DAE.

The Indo-US group visited the Tarapur Atomic Power Station Units 3 and 4 of 500 MW each and "this was an exercise undertaken by DAE to show India's latest indigenous capability", Malhotra said.

Both delegations expressed keen interest in nuclear power and other applications of nuclear energy and pointed out the gains to be derived by sharing best practices for nuclear plant design, construction, commissioning, operation, safety, life extension and regulatory oversight, he added.

The US delegation has suggested to hold a similar workshop in the US later this year, Malhotra said.
